The Manly Men of Hollywood

A certain very popular and talented Hubber of late has been maligning us manly men with outrageous claims that increasing numbers of us are wearing bras and silk panties under our three-button suits and Joe the Plumber coveralls. She's even claiming that more and more men are wearing women's dresses in public. These exaggerated claims conflict with masculine traditions dating from the cave man to Hollywood. Some of the manliest men of Hollywood are pictured below along with an opportunity to vote for your favorite manly man. Can you imagine that any of these manly men would wear silk panties, let alone a bra or dress? Not likely! Additional nominees are welcome.

Ha! I thought that would get a rise out of Terry, one of Michigan's manliest men!

From my dear friend Judith;

Loved that! I nearly fainted when I saw you had included that callow pup Leonardo DiCarprio, though. Not only is he not manly but his voice sounds like he's a helium sucker!

I was torn between Brando and Quinn...ended up voting for Brando.

Some additions I'd make to the list are a young Jean Paul Belmondo...grrrr! Youthful Michael Caine, Dirk Bogarde, Laurence Olivier, and Gian Carlo Gianinni.

And just for grins, Clark Gable not only wore no women's undies, he didn't even wear "men's"! "It Happened One Night" caused mens' undershirt sales to plummet after he disrobed and was shown to be wearing only skin under his dress shirt.

manly,

You picture made me think this was really goinh to be a GAY article. I picked Burt Lancaster, he also went to my high school.

What made you think of this?

This Hub was inspired as a counter-reaction to Hope Alexander's Hubs about the "growing number of men" who wear women's panties, bras and dresses.

Burt Lancaster was the real McCoy. As I recall he worked as a circus trapeze artist before Hollywood. I've never seen a bad Burt Lancaster movie. (I liked his politics, too!)

Here are a few additions to the above list of Manly Men of Hollywood, based on a quick scan of my Leonard Maltin's Movie guide:

Richard Burton

Harry Belafonte

Nick Cage

Sean Connery

Russell Crowe

Daniel Day-Lewis

Kirk Douglas

Robert Duvall

Henry Fonda

Gene Hackman

Dennis Hopper

Harald Lloyd

Steve McQueen

Paul Newman

Jack Nicholson

Sean Penn

Joaquin Phoenix

George C. Scott

Sylvester Stallone

Jimmy Stewart

Spencer Tracy

Richard Widmark

Hope Alexander not withstanding, I'd be surprised if any of the above Manly Men of Hollywood ever gave a thought to wearing silk panties, let alone a bra or wrap-around dress. (Kilts don't count!) Can anyone imagine Liz Taylor going for Richard Burton in a dress? On second thought I have some doubts about Dennis Hopper based on his performance opposite Isabella Rosellini in "Blue Velvet," and his recent TV commercials shilling for some insurance company or money manager. However, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I certainly enjoyed this hub and the list, mmmmm I wonder what hubber that is, the information sounds familiar but I cannot recall who it may be, regardless I love manly men and I do not believe they wear silk panties or bras for that matter. lolol Good one! :)

I think this does not prove Ms Alexander's claims wrong as you two are obviously working on different time planes. Old Hollywood does not reflect modern day happenings. Sure, you mentioned Penn and DiCarpio who are still in the mix but are lost in a sea of Zac Efrons, Robert Pattinson and similar types.

cary grant wore girls undies after another female star said `if you like it so much why not wear it yourself ? `so did WW1 AIR fighter ace herman Goring` the only luftwaffer poilot `entitled` to wear silk panties they said (as there were female poilots allso). when paula yates did her book `rock stars in thier underpants` so said she was very sup rised at the amount of the males that were wearing female undies ! nothing to do with being gay she concluded.

Cary Grant wasn't exactly a "manly man." I have no doubt that he wore silk panties. Goring was a strange duck who, according to Wikipedia, enjoyed dressing up in strange costumes. For example "Italian Foreign Minister Ciano once noted Göring wearing a fur coat looking like what "a high grade prostitute wears to the opera."[25]"

Thanks for your comment, Alan.

I vote for Jack Nicholson. He is such a charmer. Interesting Hub.

Manly Man profile image

Manly Man Hub Author 2 years ago

I'm not sure Nicholson is the manliest man, but he's one of my favorite actors. My vote went to Anthony Quinn with Burt Lancaster a close second. Women may be a better judge of who's the manliest, however, :-)

How do you rate our new senator from Massachusetts, Scott Brown?

I don't see Charlton Heston in your hub. The man was Moses, Ben-Hur, El Cid and president of the NRA... that's about as manly as a man can get in Hollywood.

Manly Man profile image

Manly Man Hub Author 2 years ago

Disturbia, thanks for the suggestion. Heston is a manly man. I didn't include him because I don't like his politics and his opposition to sensible, effective handgun control as former President of the National Rifle Association. He and Burt Lancaster were contemporaries and rivals. Lancaster was a better actor, in my opinion, and he was a liberal as I am. Today, George Clooney and Mel Gibson are contemporaries and rivals. Both are pretty good actors. I prefer Clooney because he's closer to me politically and not an anti-Semitic asshole like Mel Gibson.

what about steve mcqueen? and leonardo dicaprio...come on, one of the biggest pooh boys of the last 10 years

I agree that Steve McQueen should have been included. I put deCaprio, Woody Allen and Rock Hudson in just for laughs.

You forgot Robert Pattinson. He is SO manly! I LOVE THIS YOU KNOW - I'm not even a huge fan, already have my favorite. You can call him Jude Law ? :PP - I mean, just look at Pattinson a few years ago and take a look at him now. He turned out to be a hot manly guy in the end. That's funny, because in general british actors seem to be seen as girly-men. I don't think so. I find them really manly, especially the way their eyes look like! I call this a special way of being themselves, or like Jude said once on SNL: "You know when you're this good looking people think you're gay." Well, they're just english!

Sara,I've never heard of Robert Pattinson, but I added a photo of him above. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sara Kaena ♥ 23 months ago

That's probably because he is new on the "show business", he "new face" of Hollywood, also known as the new teen sensation. I don't know that much about him, all I know is that he is a young actor who has worked as a fashion model and who was recently discovered & called to be part of the TWILIGHT SAGA movies books where he became well-known for his acting. I never read the books but the movies are fine to me and I'm looking forward for the third film of the saga, Eclipse.

BTW, thank you for your reply to my request - he looks yummy to me :)

This is so unique, a fun spin on a hub of hunks. You have great taste, I must say, as evidenced by your lead off with the too sexy Mr. Gable. Thanks for a fun hub.

DebbieO 5 months ago

The back of a man's head (the nape); is so unbelievably sexy . . . take Brando for instance!

ManlyMan 5 months ago

Thanks DebbieO, I'll show you mine (nape, that is) if you'll shoe me yours. :-)

Ha! 4 months ago

Leonardo DiCaprio and Woody Allen??? You've got to be kidding. Those guys are the biggest girlie men. And Rock Hudson? You must be joking.

During New York’s Fashion Week last month, Alexandre Plokhov, the Russian-born menswear designer, sent out male models walking awkwardly in long skirts and hair extensions; they were greeted with gasps from the audience. Paul Marlow, the designer for Loden Dager, put eyeliner on his male models...Can tights be manly? As the “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” song goes, “We’re men, we’re men in tights; we roam around the forest looking for fights.”

A Web site dedicated entirely to men’s hosiery, e-MANcipate.net, offers an illustrated guide on how to put on pantyhose, starting with Step 1: “Take a seat. Be sure that the nails on your hands are at least in fine condition.”
